Obituary of Roy Jerome Smith, Jr.
Roy Jerome Smith Jr. was born on Monday, July 23, 1962, in Camde, NJ to the late Roy Jerome Smith and the late Carolyn Lynettea (Boone). He was the first son and had his hands full caring for his brothers and sisters. He was the protector of his mother's brood,
Bubby, as his family endearingly called him, graduated from Camden High School in 1980. He was a national chess champion for the Camden High School “Mighty Mind Bender Chess Club”. Continuing his education at Camden County College majoring in Computer Science and Specializing in programing in Cobalt and DOS.
Bubby as a self-learner, an independent and intellectual thinker, was fascinated with science and astrology. Before there was a Geek Squad, Bubby was at the helm troubleshooting computers, taking them apart and putting them back together with more power.
He loved to discuss, debate, and argue point by point on any subject including religion. Family time with Bubby consisted of playtime fighting similar to Bruce Lee’s Kungfu and wrestling in WrestleMania. He was a fan of shows like ‘Lost in Space’ and ‘Star Trek’.
He worked alongside his father at Gaudio’s formerly located in Camden, NJ and Shoprite Garden Center was formerly located in Hightstown, NJ and held various retail and night management positions throughout South Jersey. He also managed a Church’s Chicken on Haddon Ave which the family loved. Drawing on his experience as a chess Grandmaster, Bubby continued to stretch his abilities and learn. He never considered himself disabled but rather kept pushing himself to do the best he could. Bubby was kind, generous, loving son, brother, uncle, nephew and friend to all who knew him.
Bubby revered and loved his father Roy and his mother Carolyn.
Bubby is survived by his siblings; Brian Smith, Sr. (Angela) of Fort Wayne, IN; Robert Smith of Camden, NJ; Richard Smith, Sr. (Renee) of Chicago, IL; Selina (Smith)Cooper (Horace) of Newark, DE; Crystal Smith of Sewell, NJ; David Smith (Andrea) of Wilmington, DE; and Terrance Hill of Camden, NJ. He leaves to mourn his nieces and nephews; Jonisha, Ayrlicea, Richard Jr, Saah, Amber, Brian Jr, Taylor, Mathew, Zanovia, Julie, and Alison, a host of cousins, great nieces and great nephews.
Bubby will be lovingly missed and forever in our hearts.
